PPLLAW Extra Course Material

  • Standard Overhead Join
Procedures to be followed in the event of a standard overhead join, which is a standardised circuit joining procedure to be followed at uncontrolled aerodromes.

  • GAP Booklet: Airspace
Useful explanations and images to assist in your understanding of airspace rules covered in CAR Parts 71 and 91.

  • Airspace Poster

  • Carriage of Firearms Simplification of 91.9 (c)

  • AC43-11 AELS & ELTs
Explanations of the types of AELS that are referenced in 91.529.

  • Aerodrome Markings
This article from the Summer 2018/2019 issue of the Vector magazine, published by CAA contains detailed explanations of aerodrome markings used in New Zealand. Pages from the magazine are numbered from 13 to 15, of which the content on pages 13 and 14 regarding aerodrome markings is required knowledge for PPLLAW. Note that aiming point markers can look exactly like fixed distance markers if they are striped.

  • Aerodrome Lighting
CAA page providing information about the following types of aerodrome lighting, required for PPLLAW:
    (a)  Runway edge lighting (REDL)
    (b)  Runway landing threshold lighting (RTHL)
    (c)  Runway end lighting (RENL)
    (d)  Runway centreline lighting system (RCLL)
    (e)  Runway end identifier lighting (REIL)
    (f)  Circling guidance lighting (CGL)
    (g)  Runway lead in lighting (RLLS)
Explanations on the above page regarding light intensity classifications must also be understood and learnt.

  • AC139-6 Aerodrome Beacon
See pages 8 and 9 for the definitions of Aeronautical Beacon and Aerodrome Beacon.
The image below illustrates the different kinds of lighting used at aerodromes, and for each of the above types of lighting the following must be learnt: Their colour, whether they are static or flashing lights, whether each type of lights are uni-directional (can only be viewed from one direction to avoid confusion) or omni-directional (will appear the same regardless of which direction they are viewed from).
